Excellence in Pollution Prevention Recognized

VICTORIA – Canada’s environment is a little bit cleaner due to the outstanding efforts of seven organizations that have shown innovation and leadership in pollution prevention.

The following organizations were honoured at the 2005 Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) Pollution Prevention Awards gala dinner on June 1, hosted by the Canadian Centre for Pollution Prevention:

Ø Clean Choice Printers, McDonalds Corners, Ontario;

Ø Roxul Inc., Milton, Ontario;

Ø New Flyer Industries Limited, Winnipeg, Manitoba;

Ø Sani-Terre Inc., Normandin, Quebec;

Ø Clean Air Strategic Alliance, Edmonton, Alberta;

Ø Partners for a Green Hill, Ottawa, Ontario;

Ø Hamilton Community Energy, Hamilton, Ontario.

The awards were presented during the 9th Canadian National Pollution Prevention Roundtable held in Victoria, June 1-2.

"I congratulate this year’s award winners for their vision and leadership in making pollution prevention an integral part of their operations", said Minister Kerry Morash, Nova Scotia Minister of Environment and Labour and current President of CCME. "They have recognized that pollution prevention makes good environmental and business sense, and in so doing, have set an example for all businesses to follow. We are pleased to acknowledge their achievements in the presence of their peers."

Awards were given in the categories of Small, Medium and Large Business; Organization/Institution/Group; Innovations; and, Greenhouse Gases Reduction. A specially designed award and logo was presented to each winner, which they may use, signifying their status as a CCME Pollution Prevention award winner.

The Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment established the Pollution Prevention Awards Program in 1997 to support CCME’s emphasis on preventing pollution at the source, rather than cleaning it up or treating it later. Additional information about the Awards Program is available on the CCME website at http://www.ccme.ca/initiatives/pollution.html .

CCME is the major intergovernmental forum in Canada for discussion and joint action on environmental issues of national and international concern.
