Excellence in Pollution Prevention Recognized

EDMONTON – Five organizations have demonstrated outstanding innovation and leadership in pollution prevention by implementing actions to reduce pollutants before they are released to the Canadian environment.

The following organizations were honoured at the 2008 Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) Pollution Prevention Awards gala dinner on June 11, 2008, hosted by the Canadian Centre for Pollution Prevention:

  • Micro Business - LOGical Creations Ltd.
    Airdrie, Alberta
  • Medium Business - Steelcase Canada Ltd.
    Markham, Ontario
  • Organization - North York General Hospital
    Toronto, Ontario
  • Organization - University Health Network
    Toronto, Ontario
  • Greenhouse Gases Reduction - Hamilton Renewable Power Incorporated
    Hamilton, Ontario

The awards were presented by Alberta's Minister of Environment, the Honourable Rob Renner, during the 12th Canadian Pollution Prevention Roundtable held in Edmonton, Alberta June 11th – 12th.

Awards were given in the categories of Micro and Medium Business, Organization and Greenhouse Gases Reduction. A specially designed award and logo was presented to each winner, which they may use, signifying their status as a CCME Pollution Prevention award winner.

The Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment established the Pollution Prevention Awards Program in 1997 to support CCME’s emphasis on preventing pollution at the source, rather than cleaning it up or treating it later.  Over 60 companies have been recognized for their pollution prevention achievements over the life of the program. Additional information about the Awards Program is available on the CCME website at www.ccme.ca/initiatives/pollution.html?category_id=134.
